This past Sunday's TNT training was a killer. If you live in Southern California, you know what I mean. I live in the San Fernando Vally and temps were in the 110 degree range for 4-5 days.
This is the primary reason I joined the Westside Team to train for the Nike Women's Half Marathon. The team trains in Santa Monica where temps are 20 to 30 degrees cooler...usually. This Sunday was no exception but it was 85 degrees at 7:00 a.m.!
That made the 2.5 hour run very tough for me. I did do the entire course; it took me 02:40:16 and it was just under 12 miles. That's the furthest I've ever gone and only about 1.2 miles short of the half marathon. At least in October in San Francisco it will be a heck of a lot cooler.
I drank about 4 litres of water during the run but I still felt dehydrated and sluggish. I drank Gatorade at the water stop to get my electorlytes but, it was still a struggle.
This week we "unload" (let our body recover a bit) with a one hour run next Sunday, then back to 2 hours the following week and finally taking the times down by 15 min per week until the race day. This helps us prepare for the endurance without burning out our bodies and legs before the acutal race.
