On Sunday, after our 1.5 hour training run, our group of friends who are training for the marathon and half-marathon, got together for brunch with our coach, Marie Murphy. We're like groupies, hanging on her every word. The race is in three weeks and we only have two more training runs so we wanted to have a chance to express our gratitude to Marie for the inspiration and motivation and education that she's given us.
From the left: Jan, me, Shirley (we run the same pace so we just about always run together), Stephanie, Bonnie (our host) and Coach Marie (seated).
Marie is Irish and ran the marathon for the Irish Olympic team in 1988 in Seoul. She regaled us with stories of the challenges and obstacles she had to overcome to become an elite athlete and to get recognition for her accomplishments.
Marie has an inspirational story and we are truly lucky to have had the benefit of her coaching for the last 5 months. I could gush some more, but you probably get the point. We'll miss her, and we're going to do our best to stay in touch.
