The stages of change I refer to are part of a theory that has practical application in losing weight. The theory is called the Trans-Theoretical Model of Change. In this model are 6 stages. If a person skips one, whether they know the model or not, they are much more likely to grind to a halt before reaching their goals. Successful people in any endeavor successfully complete each stage of change.
We all begin the same about the need to change. By our nature we conserve energy and depend upon habit patterns to help us do this. The initial response to most change is "I won't" or "I can't". We get past this as we become aware of the advantages to us of making the change.
Once we are convinced of the need to change we begin to move toward it slowly. We still need to
reinforce our initial impressions and we look for evidence to do this. Sometimes social proof is enough - others you know did it and benefited. Sometimes socializing will do it - a group is doing it and you join in for the company and end up with a benefit. Sometimes there is a monetary reason - many companies now reward and/or penalize employees according to their wellness. Wellness is more than lack of disease but is also a lack of potential causes of disease due to specific behaviors that lead to favorable circumstances. Sometimes we learn more - through a class - and are both convinced and supported in our decision.
Finally we finish contemplation and move through Preparation and begin to take Action. Action is the display of consistent beneficial behaviors that move us toward a goal for less than 6 months. More than 6 months effort is Maintenance phase. Finally, after more than a year or perhaps longer, we have habits that are strong and we will not break them. They are a permanent part of us we do not think about. If asked if we would change them we would answer "I won't". This is termination. We no longer need a plan, it is now our lifestyle.
