Who is Rachel Cosgrove?
I grew up in a loving family that struggles with obesity. I also love food and I learned early in my life to use food in stressful times, good times and pretty much anytime. I also became active young when I started going to the gym with my dad and got involved in dance class. Dance was my first passion and after graduating with my degree in Physiology from UCSB (because I always had a fascination with the human body) my passion for dance took me to New York City where I was on scholarship at a dance studio and following my dream of being a dancer on Broadway.
Throughout this time I struggled with my body image, never having a "dancer's body" and had an eating disorder and was always on a quest to look and feel like a "fit female." A "fit female" is what I describe in my book as the girl who you see who is toned, fit and looks great wearing anything. She is confident and empowered. I have been on a quest to figure out how to look and feel like a fit female throughout my lifetime and I share this journey in my book along with my client's journeys. I have figured out what works for myself and for my clients to be a fit female for life.
I also co-own and operate Results Fitness, a 4000 square foot facility located in Southern California with my husband Alwyn Cosgrove. We have been open for 10 years. I got into the fitness industry while I was in college when I took my first certification with AFAA as an aerobic instructor and taught step class and aerobics and eventually spinning.
When I met my husband in New York I started to learn how to use weight training to change my body and incorporate it into my own routine and my client's routine's. Before this I stuck with light weights with lots of repetitions afraid of bulking up. My entire journey and the changes in my body as I did different types of exercise is all in my new book, The Female Body Breakthrough, to take you through the journey I have been on to come to the conclusions I have come to.
The Female Body Breakthrough is what I have landed on as what works after my own experience with my body, working with over a thousand women in our gym over the 10 years we have been open and documenting their workouts and using trial and error to figure out what equals the best results for them. Plus all of the seminars, books and conferences and experts in the industry who I have been lucky enough to learn from. All of this is compiled into what I have landed upon as the answer for females to make the breakthrough to achieve the body they want.
How did this book come about?
This book started off as an offer from a publisher for me to write a book on strength training for women. This was after they saw my presentation, Training Jill not Jack, at a Perform Better Seminar. I sat down and wrote up my proposal for the book and decided to shop it around to a few publishers. I ended up getting two offers and took the one that made the most sense. This original book was going to be centered around strength training. After getting the deal with Rodale I had from September of 2008 until January 1st, 2009 to turn it in. I wrote the entire 256 page book in 4 months and turned it in to Rodale by January 1st, 2009!
I knew I wanted to include before and after pictures and stories in the book and we already had quite a few from our gym but I wanted to get some really current ones too so I started by getting a group of women together for me to train in the morning to give me inspiration while I was writing the book. This was a group of 6 women who committed to give me 100% plus I had about 10-15 other women in our gym who also committed to give me pictures and a story. I was constantly hanging out in the gym asking women questions and really trying to gather every morsel of why our clients are so successful. I also used all of my experience up until this point and in this book really included EXACTLY what we do in the gym so I didn't have to invent anything new- THIS IS what we do in our gym.
What I realized was that strength training just happened to be the form of exercise we have found works to change a woman's body for the long term. I believe part of the reason is because strength training leads to not only a stronger body but for a woman to see progress, feel herself get stronger and feel empowered strength training also completely changes her mindset. I also realized that the women who had the most success for the long term were the ones who really changed their mindset and became this fit female and let go of all of their negative mental chatter.
The book quickly went from being a book on strength training to a book on Mindset along with the most effective exercise and nutrition to achieve the body of a fit female. So it contains a three prong approach which includes mindset, exercise and nutrition.
What is the basic premise of the book? What can someone who picks it up expect?
