I've been told, I've read and I've experienced it.
We tend to over estimate the amount of exercise we do and the number of calories we burn, and we underestimate how much food we eat and calories we consume.
I know when I don't weigh and meaure my food, I eat too much. When I don't use my Garmin GPS on a run, I give myself a little more credit than I actually should.
I tested it today. Since I'm tracking everything while on The Biggest Loser Club program, I write down the 9 minute walk to the gym. I've been estimating that I walk a 13-14 minute mile. Hah!
I put on my Garmin and I hustled on my walk. It was actually just under 9 minutes and my pace was 15.28 min/mile. That's 48 calories burned. At least now I know and won't overestimate calories again.
How about you? Where do you fall in this spectrum...over estimate exercise or under estimate food consumption or both?

We must take change by the hand or rest assuredly, change will take us by the throat

Hi Denise, I am the same way. I definitely feel my training is harder until it's measurable and eat way more if I don't track. It is directly correlated with self-esteem. We think we are doing great! That's the good news. Not so good if you have goals. It's common, though.
I asked my son how he felt he did on his Social Studies test. He said he feels, "reeeeeeeealy good!" He ended up earning a C+. Hmmmm...

Awareness on our activity must be also applied.

Another thing people consistently overestimate is the amount of water they drink. We usually think we drink a lot more water, more often, than we really do.
I have clients keep track using their phone's camera. Everyday you take a picture of the water you are just about to drink. At the end of each day, count the number of photos. Then you will really know how well you are hydrating.
Erase the photos and begin again the next day. Simple, easy, accurate.
